Save Money and the Environment with Ten Simple Tips

Fix leaks and use low‑flow fixtures. A dripping tap can waste thousands of litres of water a year. Fix leaks promptly. Install low‑flow shower heads and sink aerators. They are inexpensive and reduce hot water use without reducing pressure. Lower hot water use means lower heating bills.

Use reusable bags, bottles, and containers. Single‑use plastics are bad for the environment and bad for your budget. A reusable water bottle pays for itself after a few uses. Bring your own shopping bags. Pack lunch in reusable containers instead of buying prepackaged snacks.

Drive less — walk, bike, or car share. Every kilometre you do not drive saves gas, maintenance, and wear on your car. For short trips, walk or bike. For longer trips, see if car share services or public transit make sense. If you are in the market for a new car, consider an electric vehicle. Owners can save money every month compared to gas vehicles, especially in provinces with cheap electricity.

Eat more plants and waste less food. The food choices we make every day have a huge impact on the environment. Eating more plant‑based meals — even one or two a week — reduces your environmental footprint and often costs less. Also, waste less food. Plan your meals, store food properly, and eat leftovers before they spoil. The average Canadian household throws away a shocking amount of food. That is money in the trash.

Use natural light and fresh air. During the day, open your curtains instead of turning on lights. In summer, open windows at night to cool your home without air conditioning. In winter, close curtains at night to keep heat inside.

None of these tips require a big lifestyle change. Choose one or two to start. Once they become habits, add another. Over a year, these small changes can save you hundreds of dollars while helping protect the planet.
